Destination Of The Week – Bradford UK

Bradford in UK may not be one of the greatest cities to live in after its other famous counterparts like Manchester, Leeds and Liverpool however it has been the birthplace of many famous personalities and known for its green spaces, food and culture. For those who have lived here, the city sure has a lot of things to offer. This is why it is fondly remembered and considered one of the must visit places in the UK.

Bradford – A City Of World Class Talent

Bradford has been the birthplace of several famous personalities in the world. Some of them are Frederick Delius, JB Priestley, the Bronte sisters, David Hockney, Dynamo and the much loved Zayn Malik of One Direction.

 

School dinners were first served at a Bradford primary School after children collapsed because of hunger in 1906. Gradually the idea became so popular that is later spread to schools across the UK under The Provision of School Meals Act.

 

Bradford boosts of an amazing shopping center that is housed in the tunnels below the City Halls called The Sunbridge Wells. It was opened in 2016 and is a major tourist attraction in the city.

 

The former Wool Exchange was once the place of the worsted trade however today it houses the posh branches of Waterstone. Micheal Palin after looking at it stated that it made The Sistine Chapel like The Grimsby Bus Station. Though the comparison is a little far-fetched, the place does look beautiful!

 

Another major attraction of Bradford is The Alhambra Theatre that has turned 100 years old in 2014. The theatre looks beautiful and it was once the favorite destination for the likes of Laurel and Hardy. The Theatre today hosts famous shows like The Lion King and The War Horse.

 

The National Media Museum is located here and it is a part of The National Science Museum in UK. It has large galleries that are dedicated to video gaming, animation, television, photography and movies. It also houses the first ever IMAX screen in UK. In 2009 Bradford received the title as The World’s First UNESCO City of Film. This was primarily because of its big screen heritage.

 

When it comes to food Bradford is known as the Curry Capital of the UK. It has been synonymous with good curry for three years in a row now. Besides food and a host of famous places Bradford is also known for its grand Victorian structures and mill chimneys. Almost half of the district is open space and known for its greenery.
