Courses Offered:

  • Foundation studies which lead to La Trobe Melbourne diplomas or selected 1st-year-degree programs at La Trobe University
  • Diploma programs in Bioscience, Business, Engineering, Health Sciences, Information Technology, Media and Communications which lead to second-year bachelor degrees at La Trobe University
  • English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (known as ELICOS) includes General English, English for Further Studies (English for Academic Purposes), plus English programs for specific purposes.

Climate

 

Melbourne has four different seasons, hot in summer and cool in winter. You need to have a range of clothing – warm clothes and a coat for winter and light clothes for summer.

 

Currency

 

Australia uses the Australian dollar (A$ or AUD) and cents (100 cents = $1.00).

 

Cost of Living

 

Cost of living depends on your lifestyle but a single international student requires approximately $18,000 to $21,500 per year to live in Melbourne. This does not include your airfare. Banking

 

Banks are generally open Monday to Thursday, 9.30 am – 4.00 pm and Friday 9.30 am – 5.00 pm. Some banks are open on Saturday mornings. If you want to open a bank account, you need to take some identification documents – your passport, credit card, drivers license (if you have one), student ID card.

 

Tax File Number

 

If you want to work in Australia, you need to apply for a Tax File Number (TFN). If you don’t have a TFN, you will be taxed at a high rate.

 

Public Transport

 

Melbourne’s public transport system operates tram, train and bus services, generally, 5 am – 12 midnight Monday to Saturday, and 8 am – 11 pm on Sundays and public holidays.
