This depends on the country and course you are planning to study. If you are not an native English speaker and want to study a course taught in English, you be required prove your english language proficiency. The required score for IELTS depends on University/College and level of course.

For Under Grad Courses: If student does not meet the minimum eligibility criteria, he/she have to take a Foundation or a pathway course, which is usually for 1 year. Many universities and colleges offer a variety of foundation and pathway courses.

For Post Grad Courses: If student does not meet the minimum eligibility criteria, he/she have to take a postgraduate certificate program or a premaster’s course, which is usually for 6 months.
